Word 6.0: Printing Envelopes on the Brother HL8 or HL8e

SYMPTOMS

When trying to print envelopes from Word version 6.0 for Windows to a Brother HL8 or HL8e printer, the delivery address may print too high on the envelope.

CAUSE

According to Brother technical support, the earlier Brother printers emulated the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Plus printer. HL8 printers after 1988 and HL8e printers after 1992 emulate an HP LaserJet Series II.

To determine the emulation of the Brother printers, hold the Font button and turn on the power to the printer.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To successfully print envelopes to Brother printers that print the address too high, change printer drivers to the Laserjet Plus.

Word 2.0 used a printer heuristic of 768 to get the address to print in the correct location. Printer heuristics are not available in Word for Windows 6.0.
