Format Borders and Shading Can Apply to Whole Table

SYMPTOMS

In Word 6.0 for Windows, applying borders or shading to a table with no cells selected causes Word to behave differently depending on whether you apply the formatting using the menu or the toolbar.

If the insertion point is in a table without any cells selected, choosing Borders And Shading from the Format menu applies the formatting to the entire table. This behavior is different than Word version 2.0.

When the Borders toolbar is used to apply borders or shading to a table without any cells selected, the change affects only the cell where the insertion point is.

CAUSE

The first case, in which the whole table is bordered or shaded, was implemented by design in Word 6.0 to allow quicker formatting of tables.
