The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

When you print a custom-size document to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4P or 4MP printer (using HPPCL5E.DRV versions 31.1.25 through 31.1.27) or the HP 4ML printer (using the version 3.55 of the PSCRIPT.DRV), you have an unusually large right unprintable region.

Envelopes other than sizes Com10, DL, C5, B5, or Monarch will not print correctly since they are generated by using a custom paper size. Some common sizes that will NOT print correctly are:

   4 1/2 X 9 1/2
   4 3/4 X 11
   4 1/2 X 6 3/4

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 6.0 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Word 6.0a for Windows.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:

  • Use the HP IIIP driver to print the document or envelope.

    -or-

  • Increase the width of the custom-page size to compensate for the large unprintable region.

The HP products included here are manufactured by vendors independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability.

MORE INFORMATION

If you are printing a custom-size portrait document, the right unprintable region will be .26 inch. If you are printing a custom-size landscape document, the right unprintable region will be up to 2.31 inches or up to 3.1 inches. The size of the unprintable regions changes with differences in the custom paper size.

Microsoft Write shows the unprintable regions to be .25 inch for all sizes.
