  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a

SYMPTOMS

With the insertion point in the last cell of a table, when you press the TAB key to open a new row, a bookmark in the last cell expands to include the last cell of the new row. This occurs when a bookmark contains the cell indicator of the last cell. It does not occur if the bookmark is not in the last cell, nor does it occur if the bookmark does not include the table cell indicator.

CAUSE

By design in Word, a bookmark in a table is stored by column number, not by row number, if the bookmark contains the cell indicator. Therefore, if you bookmark an entire cell that is the last cell of a table, the bookmark expands when you open a new row. The end marker for the bookmark then resides in the new row in the appropriate (that is, the last) column.

Note: To view bookmarks, choose Options from the Tools menu, select the View tab, and select the Bookmarks check box under Show.

WORKAROUND

Redefine the bookmark in the last cell of the table so that the bookmark does not include the cell marker.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Turn on Bookmark view (see "Note" above).
2. Insert a 2 x 2 table. 3. Select the last cell of the table (including the cell marker).* 4. From the Edit menu, choose Bookmark. 5. Type "test" and choose the Add button. 6. Press the TAB key to create a new table row.

*Note: You can select an entire cell by choosing Bookmark from the
Edit menu, typing "\Cell" (without the quotation marks) in the
Bookmark Name box, and choosing the GoTo button. Then name the
bookmark and choose the Add button.

Notice that the beginning bookmark marker "[" is in row 2, column 2, and the end bookmark marker "]" is in row 3, column 2.
