The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

The Word 6.0 for Windows Readme Help file incorrectly shows the following sample SET field:

   {if {mergefield state} = "CA" {set phone "1-415-555-1234"} {set
   phone "1-415-555-4237}}

Help ought to show:

   {set phone {if {mergefield state} = "CA" "1-415-555-1234" "1-415-
   555-4237"}}

The first example is wrong because fields update from left to right, and from the inside to the outside. When two fields are placed inside an IF field, the left-most field is updated first, and its result is replaced by the second field. Thus, the IF field will use the most recent value of the SET field.
