WD: Ruler Disappears with Table Selected in Page Layout View

Last reviewed: February 3, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.1a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you select all or part of a table in Microsoft Word, the horizontal and vertical rulers may disappear. If you scroll to the bottom of the selection, the rulers reappear. Sometimes they remain displayed if you scroll back up to the top of the selection.

CAUSE

This happens only in page layout view if your table row selection is longer than one page. By design, the Word horizontal ruler displays the settings for the last paragraph in a selection (if nothing is selected, Word displays the settings for the paragraph where the insertion point is located). Similarly, Word displays the vertical ruler only for the page where the selection ends (or where the insertion point is located).

Sometimes, when you select all or a column of a longer table (longer than two pages), Word displays the rulers only when you scroll near the end of the selection. Once you scroll a couple pages away from the end of the selection, one or both rulers disappear again.
