This article describes how to insert an Image Sensitive Map (ISMAP) into your HTML document. It does not describe how to create a MAP file, nor how to set it up on your Web server. You can search the Internet to obtain more information about the tools used to create MAP files and the requirements for using them on a Web server.

To insert an ISMAP into your HTML document, do the following:

1. Create or open a document based on the HTML.DOT template.

2. From the Insert menu, choose Hyperlink and select the URL tab.

3. In the URL text box, type the name of your MAP file.

4. Choose the Image button and highlight the gif or jpeg image associated with your MAP file. Choose OK.

5. Choose the Advanced button.

6. Select the Sensitive Map (ISMAP) option.

7. Select the desired Text Alignment (Align) option and choose OK.

8. Choose OK.

9. Choose OK.

What Is an ISMAP?

An ISMAP is an attribute of the IMG element that informs the browser that the image is a sensitive MAP--that is, a graphic that contains hyperlinks. You can add an ISMAP attribute with Internet Assistant, but you need a MAP- editing tool to create a MAP file with sensitive areas, and you need to work with your Web administrator to configure your server to recognize and process the hyperlinks.
