WD6: Document's Protection Status Changes After IA Installation

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0a, 6.0c

SYMPTOMS

A document's protection status changes after you have installed Internet Assistant. This behavior occurs in documents based on non-HTML templates. This behavior does not occur in documents based on the HTML.DOT and WEBVIEW.DOT templates.

  • A document protected for annotations becomes protected for revisions, affecting both the annotations pane and the document pane. This behavior occurs after you choose Annotations from the Insert menu or if you switch to another document and then return to the original document.
  • A document protected for forms changes to protected for revisions. This behavior occurs when you switch focus to another document and then return focus to the original document.
  • A document protected with a password becomes protected for revisions after you type the password. The document keeps its protection status if you choose Cancel in the password dialog box. If you cancel the dialog, each time you return focus to this document, you will be prompted for the password.
  • A document protected for forms or revisions loses protection after you switch to print preview.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following methods to prevent your document's protection status from changing:

Method 1: Disable the WORDHTML.WLL. To do this, choose Templates from the

File menu. Clear the WORDHTML.WLL option in the Global
Templates And Add-ins list, and then choose OK.

Method 2: Temporarily move the WORDHTML.WLL from the <WINWORD>\STARTUP
subdirectory to another directory (for example C:\WINWORD), and
          then restart Word.

Method 3: Start Word with the /a switch. To do this:

          a. In the Windows Program Manager, locate and single-click the
Microsoft Word icon (typically found in the Microsoft Office
             group).

          b. From the File menu, choose Properties.

          c. Position your insertion point at the end of the Command line
and add the /a switch. The command line should look similar to
             the following:

                c:\winword\winword.exe /a

The drawback to this method is that your default NORMAL.DOT
template is not loaded, and you will not have access to the
following items that you created: macros, toolbars, shortcut key
assignments, styles, AutoText, and AutoCorrect entries.

Note: Be sure to remove this switch and restart Word to use
          Internet Assistant.
