Error Message Opening Attached Word Document in NT Mail

SYMPTOMS

When you double-click a Word document icon sent to you in a mail message, you receive this error message:

   The application for the attached file <filename.doc>
   (or one of its components) could not be found.

CAUSE

The document filename contains one or more spaces. The Mail Client that ships with NT cannot properly parse or resolve spaces in filenames.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To open the document, do the following:

  1. In Mail, click Save Attachment on the File menu.

  2. Select a location and click OK.

You can now open the document in Word.
