Last reviewed: February 5, 1998
Article ID: Q142409
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows NT, version 6.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you edit a footnote of a subdocument while you are in master document view, the changes you make are not retained, even though the status bar indicates that the documents were saved. This problem does not occur when you insert a footnote; it occurs only when you edit the footnote.

This problem does not occur when you edit the subdocument from within the master document or when you open the subdocument as a normal Word document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Word listed at the top of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.

WORKAROUND

To retain changes you make to footnotes within your subdocuments, use one of the following workarounds.

Method 1: If you are in the master document, do the following:

          a. Double-click the subdocument icon.
          b. Modify the footnote.
          c. Save and close the subdocument.
          d. Save and close the master document.

Method 2: Open the subdocument outside of the master document, edit the
footnote, and then save and close the subdocument.
