SYMPTOMS

When you use the File command on the Insert menu to insert a file, if the inserted document contains a numbered list with a multilevel format, the list will change to an outline number format. For example, a list formatted with legal numbering may be changed to outline numbering.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the following steps after you insert the document:

  1. In the destination document, select the multilevel numbered list.

  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets And Numbering.

  3. Click the Multilevel tab, select the desired numbering format, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows.
