The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SUMMARY

Microsoft will periodically provide updated versions of the Web page authoring tools to keep up with changing technology. These tools can either be updated automatically by Word, or you can manually request Word to check for and download the latest version of the tools.

NOTE: After Word checks to see if you need to update your files, it sets a date in the AutoUpdate registry setting that it uses to perform the next AutoUpdate. The date will be reset to one month after the current AutoUpdate.

MORE INFORMATION

To Update Automatically

If you have access to the World Wide Web, Word will periodically check to see if a newer version of the Web authoring tools is available on the Microsoft Web site. If a newer version is found, a message appears notifying you that a newer version is available. You can choose to download and install the latest version.

To Update Manually

If you have a dial-up connection to the World Wide Web, use the AutoUpdate command on the Tools menu to manually check for the latest version:

  1. In Word, open a Web page document.

  2. On the Tools menu, click AutoUpdate.

  3. If Word prompts you to download the latest versions, click Yes.

-or-

If you have a dial-up connection to the World Wide Web, use your Internet Browser to connect to the AutoUpdate Web Page to manually check for the latest version:

  1. From your Internet browser connect to the following URL:

          http://www.microsoft.com/officefreestuff/word

NOTE: Because the Microsoft Web site is constantly updated, the site address may change without notice. If this occurs, link to the Microsoft home page at the following address:

          http://www.microsoft.com/

  2. Click Word 97 Web Page Authoring Tools Update.

  3. Follow the directions for downloading the wd97au.exe file.

To Turn Off AutoUpdate

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

  1. Quit all programs.

  2. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run.

  3. In the Open dialog box, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

  4. Go to the following registry key:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\HTML

The status bar will display the following:

          My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\HTML

  5. Click the HTML key to select it.

  6. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File, type a file name, and then click Save.

  7. Do one or both of the following:

To turn off the automatic AutoUpdate
        ------------------------------------

        a. In the HTML key, double-click the AutoUpdate entry.

NOTE: The AutoUpdate Value data will contain the date of the next
