Last reviewed: March 5, 1998

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

Opening a Word 97 document in earlier versions of Word displays the field error:

   Error! Bookmark not defined.

Displaying the field codes(ALT+F9) shows the following field:

   {autoindex "<Any text>" }

CAUSE

The document contained a DocVariable field that was inserted and saved from Word 97 and the document has been:

  • Opened in a previous version of Word (6.x or 7.x) using the Word 97 import converter.

    -or-

  • Opened and saved from a previous version of Word (6.x or 7.x) using the Word 97 import converter and has been reopened in Word 97.

The Autoindex field is a converted DocVariable field. Because the DocVariable field is not available in versions of Word prior to Word 97, the conversion process does not convert it. The document variables are lost during the conversion and cannot be retrieved.

WORKAROUND

Method 1: In Word 97, Save the Document in Microsoft Word 6.0/95 Format
