WD97: Photo Editor Appears to Hang On Low-Memory Computer

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to insert a JPEG picture object into Microsoft Word from Photo Editor, Photo Editor will appear to stop responding when you click "Exit and Return to <document>" on the File menu.

After a long delay however, Photo Editor will insert the picture into Microsoft Word, and then quit.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when your computer has 16 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM) or fewer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

  • Increase the amount of RAM on your computer.

    - or -

  • Use another paint or photo program, such as Microsoft Paint

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Photo Editor 97. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem mainly occurs on 486/33 computers with 16 MB or fewer of RAM, and a 2 MB video card.
