SYMPTOMSWhen you create a document in Microsoft Word 97 with the Widow/Orphan Control setting turned on and then save it in the Microsoft Word 6.0/95 format or in Rich Text Format (RTF), none of the paragraphs will be formatted with Widow/Orphan control setting when you open it in Microsoft Word 6.x.
CAUSEWhen Microsoft Word 97 writes out the RTF code for the Widow/Orphan Control setting, Microsoft Word 6.x only partially understands the code and does not apply the Widow/Orphan Control setting to any of the paragraphs.
RESOLUTIONTo correct this problem, install Microsoft Word 97 Service Release 1 (SR- 1). To work around this problem, once you open the document in Microsoft Word 6.x, you can reapply the Widow/Orphan Control setting to the appropriate paragraphs. To do this, follow these steps:
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 97 SR-1. For additional information about SR-1, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
