Last reviewed: November 7, 1997
Article ID: Q176333
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, versions 7.0, 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you insert an "a" (without the quotation marks) with an acute accent (') above it (ASCII 0225 symbol) in a Word document, the area where the "a" should be is blank or is formatted as a gray dotted box.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the text is formatted with the MS LineDraw font.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Keyboard to Insert the Symbol

To do this, press ALT+0225.

NOTE: You must use the numeric keypad to type the numbers.

Method 2: Use a Different Font

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Insert menu, click Symbol.

  2. In the Font box, select a font other than MS LineDraw.

  3. Find the accented "a" (without the quotation marks), select it, and then click Insert.

Method 3: Use a Keystroke

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Press CTRL+Apostrophe.

  2. Type the letter "a" (without the quotation marks).

MORE INFORMATION

The MS LineDraw font is used solely for displaying line draw characters in documents converted to Word for Windows from Microsoft Word for MS-DOS or from WordPerfect versions 5.x. In general, this font should not be used in Word versions 6.x or 7.x.
