First Blank Document Is Closed if First Action Is Not an Edit

SYMPTOMS

If you open Microsoft Word for Windows without a specific file designated, it creates a blank document. If you do not edit this document before using features that involve other files, such as opening an existing document, the first document is closed automatically.

CAUSE

Word automatically closes only the initial blank document that Word opens automatically. Any blank documents that you open by selecting New from the File menu remain open until you manually close them.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Word for Windows listed above. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
