Ignore All in Spelling Dialog Box Selects Consecutive Words

Last reviewed: September 4, 1997
Article ID: Q97045
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c

SUMMARY

When you choose the Spelling command from the Tools menu, the Ignore All option in the Spelling dialog box does not work properly when the following three conditions exist:

  • The selected word is one that the spelling checker considers misspelled (the word is not found in the dictionary)

    -and-

  • The word is repeated consecutively

    -and-

  • The word is not preceded by another character and a space or tab

If all three of these conditions exist, the spelling checker flags the first instance of the word as "Not in Dictionary" and offers you the options to Correct, Ignore, Ignore All, and so on. When you choose Ignore All, the spelling checker skips the second instance of the word. It then, however, proceeds to flag the third and all subsequent instances of the word as "Repeated Word."

This problem occurs if the word exists consecutively, as in the two examples below:

   Separate Lines Same Line
   ----------------------------------------------------------------

   Micrsoft Micrsoft Micrsoft Micrsoft Micrsoft
   Micrsoft
   Micrsoft
   Micrsoft

If you place a character and a space or tab before each instance of the word, the Ignore All option works properly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 6.0, 6.0a, and 6.0c. This problem was corrected in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95.

MORE INFORMATION

When you choose Ignore All, the word in question should not be flagged again for any reason during the spelling session. The spelling checker should not flag the word as Repeated Word, for example, even if the word is repeated.

For more information on using the Spelling command, see pages 277-283 in the "Microsoft Word User's Guide."
