Many sound cards are only "half duplex" (as opposed to "full duplex"). If a sound card is "half duplex" it cannot record and play audio at the same time. That means that speech recognition cannot be listening while the card is playing sound. Fortunately, with plug-and-play the number of full duplex sound cards is increasing.
