Composite indexes can now contain 900 bytes in the index. The order and number of columns in a composite index affect performance. Listing a greater number of columns in the index improves performance for covered queries that benefit by having a column or search criteria listed in the composite index. However, indexes that cover fewer columns require less I/O to update and insert rows.
