Installing ODBC Drivers

If you will use the Microsoft® Access® database management system, the Microsoft® Visual Basic® programming system, or another ODBC application to connect to SQL Server from a client, you should install the latest ODBC drivers on that client. ODBC drivers can be installed on client workstations running the Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups, and Windows operating systems.

For computers running Windows NT, the ODBC driver is installed automatically when the SQL Server setup program installs the server or client software.

For computers running Windows or Windows for Workgroups, you must install the ODBC drivers after the SQL Server client software is installed. An ODBC setup program is provided on the SQL Server CD in the \CLIENTS\WIN16\ODBC directory. This setup program installs the latest ODBC SQL Server driver, the ODBC Driver Manager application (ODBC) in the Control Panel, and the associated ODBC Help file.

To install the ODBC driver on a Windows- or Windows for Workgroups-based computer
  1. From the \CLIENTS\WIN16\ODBC directory on the SQL Server 6.0 CD, run SETUP.EXE.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. For more information during the installation, choose the Help button.

If you are upgrading an existing installation, the new ODBC driver will replace the existing driver. If you want to keep the existing driver, make a backup copy of SQLSRVR.DLL and DRVSSRVR.HLP, found in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.

For more information about installing, configuring, and using the ODBC driver, see the online Help for the ODBC setup program and the online Help for the ODBC application in the Control Panel.
