Replacing Colors

Use the Color Replacer tool to replace one color in a selection or layer with another color. You can use brush strokes to replace only those pixels that the brush touches or you can replace all pixels of a certain color in a selection or a layer. You can set a tolerance value so that the Color Replacer changes within a given color value range, not just identical colors.

Note: The Color Replacer tool also works with gradients and patterns.

To use the Color Replacer tool:

  1. On the Tool palette, choose the Color Replacer tool . (The tool is grouped with the Eye Dropper tool.)

  2. Choose the material (the color, gradient, or pattern) you wish to replace. Left-click it to make it the Foreground/Stroke material, or right-click it to make it the Background/Fill material.

  3. Choose the material to use as the replacement material. The replacement material can be any material in the current image, or you can use the Materials palette to choose the replacement material.

  4. If the material you wish to replace is the current Foreground/Stroke material, make the replacement material the Background/Fill material.

  5. If the material you wish to replace is the current Background/Fill material, make the replacement material the Foreground/Stroke material.

  1. To replace materials using brush strokes (rather than all materials in the layer), on the Tool Options palette choose the brush tip, size, opacity, and other options. See Setting Brush and Paint Options.

  2. In the Tolerance edit box, specify a value that sets how closely the replacement material must match the material you wish to replace. The range is 0 to 200. At lower settings, only pixels with very similar colors are replaced. At higher settings, more pixels are replaced.

  3. Position the cursor over the area of a selection or layer that contains the material you want to replace, and then do one of the following:

  4. To replace all occurrences of a material, double-click with the left mouse button to replace Background/Fill material with Foreground/Stroke material; or double-click with the right mouse button to replace Foreground/Stroke material with Background/Fill material.

  5. To use the current Foreground/Stroke material as the replacement material, click the Replace all pixels button in the Tool Options palette.

  6. To replace using brush strokes, click and/or drag in the image. Click and drag with the left mouse button to replace Background/Fill material with Foreground/Stroke material. Click and drag with the right mouse button to replace Foreground/Stroke material with Background/Fill material. Be aware of the current Tolerance setting as you use this method of replacement.
