Monitor EDIDs describe the capabilities of specific displays, and includes information such as the manufacturer name and model, display type, and supported timings and modes. The NVIDIA graphics cards use the information in the EDID to properly utilise the display.
To more effectively utilise many displays used in professional workstations, some professionals prefer to generate their own EDIDs for use with those displays. The NVIDIA driver allows such experts to specify that information from a particular EDID be used for a specific connector or group of connectors on the graphics card.
The NVIDIA driver also lets you take the EDID information from a connected display and save it to a file on your disk.
