Common Problems and How to Solve Them

While each of your photos is unique, they may have problems in common. How do you know how to go about making them look their best?

Here are before-and-after photos that will help you in determining what you need to do with your photos.

Problem

How to Solve It

Entire photo too dark (underexposed) or

too light (overexposed)

Choose Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Automatic Contrast Enhancement. See Automatically Enhancing Contrast.

Subject too dark or

too light

First, choose Adjust > Color Balance > Automatic Color Balance. See Automatically Balancing Colors. Next, choose Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Automatic Contrast Enhancement. See Automatically Enhancing Contrast. Then, choose Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Automatic Saturation Enhancement. See Automatically Enhancing Saturation.

Contrast too low or too high

Choose Adjust > Brightness and Contrast > Automatic Contrast Enhancement to or use specific commands to improve the contrast manually. See Improving Contrast.

Unnatural colors (photo taken indoors without a flash)

Choose Adjust > Color Balance > Automatic Color Balance. See Automatically Balancing Colors.

Unnatural skin tones

Choose Adjust > Color Balance > Manual Color Correction. See Using Source and Target Colors to Correct Colors Manually.

Scratches

Choose Adjust > Noise > Automatic Small Scratch Removal or use the Scratch Remover tool. See Removing Scratches with the Automatic Small Scratch Remover Command or Removing Scratches with the Scratch Remover Tool.

Specks or noise

Choose Adjust > Noise > and then a command. See Removing Image Defects and Noise.

Red eyes

Choose Adjust > Red-eye Removal. See Removing Red Eyes.

Foggy or hazy image

Choose Adjust > Sharpness > Clarify. See Improving Image Clarity.

Subject out of focus

Choose Adjust > Sharpness > one of the Sharpening commands. See Improving Image Clarity.

Distorted image from digital camera

Choose Adjust > Lens Correction > and then the Barrel, Fisheye, or Pincushion Distortion Correction. See Correcting Image Distortions.

Unwanted pattern on scanned image

Choose Adjust > Noise > Moiré Pattern Removal. See Removing Undesirable Patterns in Scanned Images.

Old, faded photo
